Thetford Town grabbed three vital Ridgeons Division One points by beating Ipswich Wanderers on Tuesday night.

Rob Browne opened the scoring after two minutes and was then brought down for a penalty which was coolly dispatched by Lee Brewer as Thetford played as well as they have all season.

A Dave Richards far post header gave Thetford a 3-0 interval lead and when Browne added his second and Thetford's fourth at the start of the second half a rout looked on the cards.

Then, as previously, Thetford nearly contributed to their own downfall when Cary Clayton scored an own goal after Steve Crawshaw had lost possession and a penalty was awarded after Skipp had lost possession and Billham brought down the on rushing striker.

The two goals for Ipswich Wanderers apart, Thetford played with flair and passion in the first half and played as well as they have all season.

With three tough games coming up starting on Saturday with Halstead away, Brantham away Tuesday night and Newmarket at home next Saturday, Tuesday's three points were vital.

Saturday's 2-0 defeat at on-form Stowmarket saw two sloppy goals conceded in the first 20 minutes but then it was all Thetford but as in many games this season were unable to turn their possession into goals.

Sam Giacomelli did have the ball in the net only to have it disallowed for pushing and chances fell to Rob Browne, Sam Bryant and Cal Webb. So it was another case of what might have been.

Thetford Reserves had their first match for over a month and beat Stowmarket Reserves 4-0 with a hat trick for Leon Campbell who came on for the last 20 minutes of the first team match against Ipswich Wanderers and looked sharp.

The U18's were rested from first team duties on Tuesday as they prepared for a top-of-the-table clash against Downham Town.

Thetford's end-of-the-season celebrations will take place in a marquee kindly supplied by U18's manager Nigel Armes who celebrates his 50th birthday on Friday May 29.
