Local bragging rights were secured in style by Thetford Town with a 4-2 victory at Swaffham Town in the FA Cup extra preliminary qualifying round.
The Pedlars, who have returned to the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division this season, had high hopes of kick-starting a cup run as they welcomed a Thetford side that had been thumped 8-0 by Godmanchester Rovers in midweek.
Yet Mark Scott’s visitors bounced back in style with Olly Standley’s brace, a debut goal for Shaun Hunsdon and a Bruno Tavares stunner putting the Brecklanders in control before half-time.
Alex Vincent found the net twice after the break but Swaffham failed to complete the comeback and it was Thetford who claimed the £1,500 in prize money.
Thetford boss Scott said: “I’m extremely pleased and proud of my squad. Their reaction and character shown on Saturday proved their ability to focus on the present and not dwell on the past.”
Higher-level Bury Town, who play in the Ryman League North Division, will make the short trip to Mundford Road on Saturday, August 29, in the preliminary qualifying round.
The winner of that match will claim £1,925 in prize money and will be one of the 232 teams starting on the road to Wembley in the first qualifying round.
Thetford will now look to kickstart their league campaign, as they sit bottom of the Premier Division having lost both of their matches so far.
It is a third successive away game though, at Brantham Athletic, who won 1-0 at home against Godmanchester on the opening day before losing 1-0 at FC Clacton. Brantham were back to winning ways at Broxbourne Borough in the FA Cup though, winning 2-1 against their lower-level opponents in the extra preliminary round.
