Safety is almost secured for Thetford Town after picking up four much-needed points over the Easter weekend.

Mark Scott’s team are now eight points clear of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division relegation zone with four games still to play, starting at eighth-placed Brantham Athletic on Saturday.

Following a 2-1 win away to Wivenhoe on Saturday, with goals from Elliot Smith and James Dean, Town were at home to local rivals Diss Town on Monday.

Both teams started evenly with the first chance of the match falling to Diss, a great save by Scott Cruickshank denying Matt Dixon from scoring.

Thetford then started to take control, an Ian Fancett free-kick found Halen Smith in the box, his shot was saved, Dean hit the rebound, which was also knocked away by the keeper.

A Fancett corner was headed towards goal by Elliot Smith, Town players claimed it crossed the line and called for a goal, from the reaction of the Diss players, they thought the same, however, the officials weren’t of the same opinion.

A shot by Olly Standley was saved, before Luke Bailey made a crucial goal-line clearance at the other end to keep the score at 0-0 through to half-time.

A couple of minutes into the second half, Halen Smith passed to Standley, who crossed to Fancett on the edge of the box, Fancett hit the ball low and hard to beat the keeper and put the Brecklanders ahead.

Diss equalised from a corner through Ben Lewis to make it 1-1.

Sam Bryant then replaced Dean and immediately made an impact on the game, with a good run and cross to Elliot Smith, whose volley was blocked.

A great shot from range by Fancett hit the post and Standley was brought down in the box, although the resulting penalty was saved by the keeper, leaving the score at 1-1 and confirming relegation for the Tangerines.
