Boss Mark Scott is urging his Thetford Town side to keep scoring because he believes goal difference could decide the Ridgeons First Division title race.

Thetford annihilated Cornard United 10-0 on Saturday while title rivals Godmanchester Rovers slipped up at Fakenham Town with a 0-0 draw.

With his side set to replace Godmanchester at the top of table, if they win their two games in hand, attack-minded Scott has told his players to fire their way to league glory.

The Thetford boss said: “We thought Cornard was a great opportunity to send out a title message and that’s what we did.

“It was a game everyone was expecting us to win but even we didn’t think we’d do it 10-0. We were really ruthless and started off so well.

“We were 7-0 up at half time and I told the lads we had to better the score that Whitton United (8-0) and Godmanchester Rovers (7-1) had hammered them by.

“We said it was a great opportunity to boost our goal difference because I really think the title could come down to it.

“We’ve got bundles of goals in our side and I don’t mean to be disrespectful to the two sides were playing next (Downham and Stowmarket) but we want to get six points and score a hatful.”

Matt Dixon bagged four times while goals from Steve Harley (2), Bruno Tavares (2), Volta Rocha and Nathan Szyszlyk completed the Brecklanders’ rout on Saturday.

Scott’s title-chasing side hosted struggling Downham Town last night and will travel to relegation-threatened Stowmarket Town on Saturday.

Thetford also welcome Cambridge University Press for their third league in a week on Tuesday (7.45pm).

“If we win our games in hand we’ll go top mathematically so it’s in our hands now,” said Scott.

“It was nice to see that Godmanchester and March (3-1 loss at home to Swaffham) slipped up at the weekend but it’s all about what we do that counts.

“We were optimistic that Fakenham could get something against Godmanchester and to be fair if others can help us along the way then that makes me happy. “There’ll be plenty of twists and turns between now and the end of the season - I just hope they don’t involve us.”

Dave Richards is available again after completing his suspension while Scott will decide whether to ask captain Sean O’Donnell to travel back from his RAF post to play against Stowmarket.
