Thetford went down to defeat in this top of the table clash against Wymondham, who reduced the gap at the top to six points.

The weather leading up to the match meant that the pitch was wet, muddy and not the surface for Thetford to play their normal running game.

Wymondham started the stronger of the two teams and within 20 minutes had used their heavy forwards to score three unconverted tries.

Captain Chris Thomas and pack leader Aaron Waters read the riot act and the team responded, with Josh Clark out jumping the waiting Wymondham players to claim the kick off.

The forwards drove deep into the home 22 and quick hands allowed Clark to dummy his way through the line to score.

Thetford started to get into their groove and had Wymondham camped in their own 22 but a break from the Wymondham centre took the action back to Thetford’s half. The penalty count started to mount on both teams but consecutive infringements would see Thetford down to 14.

Strong running from Matt Bailey, Jasper Spencer and Dan Cotton worked back to the Wymondham try line only for Wymondham to give away a penalty. Will Martin always alert took the penalty quickly and weaved his way to score.

Before half time a speculative long pass from Thetford was expertly picked off by the Wymondham winger, who scored to make the half time score 22-12.

Thetford regrouped but Wymondham again came out on top of the early second half exchanges. Thetford pulled another try back through Thomas after driving over the line.

As the game went on the atmosphere and the physicality intensified. The penalty and scrum count was rising fast and the referee growing frustrated reduced the Thetford team to 14 again and then moments later to 13. The remaining players fought hard and did not conceded any points whilst playing with 13 but shortly after being returned to 14 players the tackles started to get higher and less effective.

Wymondham brought on fresh legs and against the tired men of Thetford the dam broke and a great solo try was scored.

The end of the game was called and Thetford were dealt their third loss of the season.
