Thetford athletes perform well at Norfolk Track and Field Championships

Thetford athletes again shone at county level as they out-performed rivals from some of Norfolk’s largest athletics clubs on the first day of the 2015 Norfolk County Track and Field Championships.

Isabel Smythe medalled during her first experience of performing at county level with a bronze in the U11 60m sprint, breaking her personal best as she clocked a time of 9.7 seconds.

Smythe then made it a double bronze as well as a double personal best when she raced to another third in the U11 600m race with a time of 2:04.1.

Sam Rolph also achieved a bronze medal, but on this occasion in the slightly longer sprint of 100m over which the under-15s compete, completing the race in 12.4. Rolph also ran a PB of 25.2 when finishing third in the 200m.

Tom Kirton had third place finishes in the 100m and 200m sprints and ran PBs in both with times of 11.7 and 23.9 respectively.

Harley Swan secured gold in the U15 800m after a hard-fought battle against team-mate Aiden Try who Swan edged on the line with just 0.6 seconds separating them.

Both Thetford athletes were four seconds ahead of the City of Norwich athlete who finished third. Swan also ran a personal best on his way to a silver medal in the U15 300m, clocking 42.3. Again, Aiden Try was just 0.6 seconds behind in third. In the U17 800m event, Charlie Stone finished third with a time of 2:24.4.

There was a silver for Joe Smythe in the U15 long jump after a leap of 4.52m. Cameron Try secured bronze in the U13 shot putt with a best throw of 5.59m. Joseph Nicholson was victorious in the U17 hammer throw, securing gold with a throw of 36.33. Nicholson then secured second with a throw of 24.02m in the discus.

With a second day of competition next weekend, Thetford athletes are hopeful of further success.
