Youngsters from Thetford Athletics Club had to battle through some high temperatures in Great Yarmouth during the third round of the Quad Kids tournament.

Quad Kids sees athletes aged between school years four and eight complete in four disciplines; a sprint, middle-distance run, a throw and a jump event.

In the younger age category, for those in school years four and five, Cameron Try narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth place for the second time during this season’s Quad Kids series, just 10 points behind third-placed Joel Burgess from Waveney.

Cameron registered a personal best in the standing long jump when he leapt to 2.03m, the only boy in his age category to break the two-metre mark.

Josh McGuire finished 13th out of the 26 boys taking part from school years four and five. Charlie Garrod made his debut in the Quad Kids competition and finished in a highly creditable 16th spot considering that he was competing against boys up to two years older than he was. He also recorded the eighth fastest 600m run of the day, crossing the line in 2.07m.

Abigail Clouston was the sole girl competing in the school year 4/5 competition and finished in 20th place out of 25 girls taking part.

Thetford was better represented in the older age category for athletes in school years six, seven and eight. Jessica Norkett secured the bronze medal in the girls’ competition recording the third fastest sprint and 800m run of the day.

Emma Coppin finished in sixth overall, just 20 points behind third-placed Norkett, recording the fourth-fastest 600m and the fourth-longest long jump along the way.

Holly Goymour finished in seventh overall with Maddie Rolph just one place and nine points behind Goymour. Bethany Burrows completed the line up for the Thetford girls finishing, in 12th out of 14.

Two Thetford boys made the medals podium, with Aiden Try achieving the silver and Sam Rolph the bronze medal. Aiden recorded a time of 2.22m on his way to winning an 800m race dominated by Thetford athletes with Sam Rolph just one second behind, smashing his previous PB for the distance, and Harley Swan a further three seconds behind Rolph. Rolph also recorded the second-fastest 100m sprint of the day in 13 seconds.
