A penalty from Steve Harley went some way to erasing the memory of Saturday's disappointing 1-1 draw with Wivenhoe, as Mildenhall Town claimed local bragging rights with a single-goal victory over Ely City on Monday.

The former Wroxham man kept his cool from the spot in the 20th minute after Aaron Turner had been hauled to the ground inside the area. Without taking a run-up, Harley calmly wrong-footed visiting goalkeeper Lee Pacey with a composed finish.

Ely responded well and could have been level seven minutes later. Nick Impey dispossessed Andrew Cusack on the right wing, before crossing for Richard Chadwick.

The forward's looping header beat keeper Josh Pope, but not the crossbar.

Pope then produced superb acrobatics to deny Brady Stone, before Tony Beck really should have equalised with half-time fast approaching.

Impey again caused problems, drilling in a low shot, which Pope parried into the path of Beck, but the midfielder sent his effort against the post with the goal at his mercy.

Mildenhall's leading goalscorer, John Sands, flashed an effort wide of goal at the start of the second half, before Pope again frustrated Impey, tipping his effort over the bar.

Harley went close to doubling his and Mildenhall's tally for the afternoon, but his goal-bound header was deflected over by Stone as the derby drew to a close.
