It was a great day for Iain Yule when the Norfolk Open Championship was held at Thetford Golf Club last week.

Iain’s 23-year-old son Jack, a plus-three amateur at King’s Lynn who is also a member at Thetford, won the title with excellent rounds of 70 and 67 for a seven-under-par total of 137.

He finished two strokes ahead of the professional champion, Ben Rawsthorne of Bawburgh, who returned cards of 69-70-139.

Meanwhile home player Iain came through the field with a level par afternoon round of 72 to finish as the runner-up in the amateur competition, completing a Yule one-two.

Jack added another trophy to his collection by winning the Henry Craske Salver as the leading amateur in the County Amateur Championship combined with the Norfolk Open.

There was a bumper field of 69 professionals and amateurs from all over Norfolk and Rawsthorne led the way after his morning 69. Jack Yule and Tom Maxwell (Wensum Valley) were one behind with Nic Cains (Swaffham) on 71.

Mark Spooner (Bawburgh) moved up the leaderboard with his afternoon round of 69 to set the early pace with 144. Veteran Ian Ellis (Great Yarmouth & Caister) returned a second 72 to match that total.

Cains then came in with 70 for 141 before Rawsthorne added a 70 of his own for 139. But that left Jack Yule to show the professionals the way to do it.

Peter Croker won the Needham Davis Cup with a sparkling round of 85-11-64 at Thetford.

He finished four strokes clear of the field as Roger Smith (10), Rafe Ashby (13) and Andrew Bremner (10) all came in with nett 68s.

Other scores: James Taylor 80-11-69, Jason Huggins 75-5-70, Neil Elers 81-11-70, Robert Bentley 83-13-70, Tom Bullen 87-16-71, David Robinson 85-14-71, Pat Gould 86-15-71, Paul Pearce 78-6-72, Geoff Clements 82-10-72, James Camilleri 81-9-72, Gary Scott 81-8-73, Doug Stephen 83-10-73, Andrew Beard 81-8-73.

King’s Lynn have won the county seniors team competition for the Barnard Trophy for a record third successive year.

They beat RAF Marham by four holes in an exciting final at Swaffham.

Lynn will also be featuring in the Cullington Cup final, against Eaton, while Costessey Park and Wensum Valley will compete for the Myhill Trophy. Both matches will take place at Richmond Park.
