It has been a season to remember for Thetford Rugby Club

They started the campaign on a plateau after entering Eastern Counties One in 2014/15 and finishing sixth two years running and the Heathens having been relegated from EC3 as they struggled for numbers.

With a new coaches Nigel Brown and Will Martin, captains Chris Thomas, Josh Clark, Aaron Stokoe and and with Gary Lee still at the helm as chairman, they approached the new season with eyes on finishing top of the pile this year.

The season started well with seven wins on the bounce before being pipped by the local rivals Wymondham at home. Thetford would pick themselves up again and go on another seven-match winning streak before that was brought to an end by Woodbridge. Thetford would only taste defeat one more time, again at the hands of Wymondham.

With only three losses and with Thetford scoring 1071 points, the title was won with two weeks to spare, eventually by an 11 point margin.

The Heathens had a rough start to the season, with numbers sometimes being woefully short, but with Adam Brown and Aaron Stokoe organising the team numbers increased and the wins started rolling in. By January the Heathens were putting out 20-plus+ players each week and many of those were training hard and representing the first team on a regular basis. The EC4 title was won with two games left and this time by a margin of six points.

Thetford also won the Crowley Cup by beating old rivals Fakenham and then set their sights on the Norfolk Junior Cup. Having won this the previous year Thetford met league rivals Wymondham in the final at Holt. Both teams set out with a point to prove and Thetford came out on top, setting the record straight after two league defeats.

On the field the club has had a lot of success but there was lots to talk about off the field too. Thetford’s youth section headed by Andrew Soanes continues to grow and the club became an RFU accredited club.

On top of that Bury Saints American Football team made Thetford their home, the club became an official o2 touch rugby centre and the atmosphere at Two Mile Bottom has allowed the once struggling rugby club to grow and grow. If you want to get involved you can find the club on Facebook.
