Thetford Ladies 8, Watton II 2

FINE passing and unwavering determination clinched an excellent result in this hockey friendly.

Thetford Ladies set out their game early with some great passing to make good use of the pitch, leaving few gaps in defence for Watton II to break through.

The first half was intense as the sides weighed each other up - until a clean ball into the D found Leanne Smith to score.

And Watton held firm until half-time to thwart the home side's efforts for a second.

The half line of Charlie Harwood, Sarah Nichol, Tracy Newman and Karen Hodgkinson re-doubled efforts to keep pace on the ball.

Nichol snatched Thetford's second goal, with a saucy reverse flick into goal from a short corner. Smith got her second of the day very quickly afterwards.

Watton fired back when a player broke free to score from the top of the D.

Dawn Heavey converted a short corner with a powerful strike, followed quickly by Harwood getting her first from a fine pass into the D.

Heavey stepped up again to take her second - and then her third after some exceptional control of the ball and a fine display of two-on-one with Hodgkinson.

Harwood, making some fine runs on the left, took the eighth goal after a fine show of speedy passing from the team.

New members are always welcome to join. Thetford Town Hockey Club needs more players, especially goalkeepers for the ladies' teams.

Training is at the leisure centre from 7-9pm on Wednesdays.
