WATTON Cricket Club edged out local rivals and leaders Rocklands A in a top of the table clash in division eight of the Lucas Fettes Norfolk Cricket League.

Winning the toss, Watton elected to bat first aiming to take the advantage on an easy paced batting wicket.

Their top order struggled against Rocklands' opening bowlers.

Runs were difficult to score and two run outs left Watton in trouble at 30-4 after 18 overs.

But Matty Webster, with 49, held the innings together and built a platform for Watton's middle order stroke players to play some attacking shots at the end of the innings, including 24 from Norman.

Watton were eventually all out in the 45th and final over for a competitive 144 runs.

Rocklands A opening bowler Paul Allen did most of the damage finishing with excellent figures of 5-26 from his 12 overs.

The Rocklands A innings began slowly mirroring Watton's first few overs.

Again runs were difficult to score against accurate bowling and tight fielding.

Opening bowler Malcolm Ranson bowled a great line and length, and eventually conceded only 10 runs from his 12 overs.

Some strong middle order hitting brought Rocklands A within sight of victory as Puttock made 24 and Dunning hit 19.

And with 10 overs remaining they needed 41 runs with seven wickets in hand and looked in the stronger position of the two sides.

But Watton bowlers Richard Dicks and Shaun Sayer fought back holding their nerve to bowl Watton to victory by only 13 runs.

Sayer took four wickets for 37 including the dangerous opener Kay, while Dicks chipped in with 3-46 from his 10 overs.

Watton picked up a very valuable 24 points for their victory, while defeat left Rocklands with only eight points to show from the game.

Defeat for Old Buckenham B this weekend means they slip from second to fourth in Division Eight.

This victory moves Watton from third to second place behind leaders Rocklands A.

With only two games remaining both Watton and Rocklands A appear strong favourites to gain promotion at the end of the season.

Rocklands currently have an average of 20.25, while Watton's has increased to 18.82.

Third-placed Hingham are on 18.00 and Old Buckenham B are down to 17.73.
