Thetford Town lost their FA Cup replay against Whitton 2-0 last night.

The report from the first tie is printed further down this report.

Thetford are currently 12th in the Ridgeons First Division table after two games with one win, travel to early pace-setters Long Melford on Saturday (3pm).

Manager Mark Scott said: “How things change! They are top of the table. It was us this time

last week.

“Then the Diss match. We had great expectations for the match against Diss, very disappointed to lose after the start we had had.

“I'm expecting an extremely tough match against Long Melford. It sounds like they are going to be hard to break down. It's important for us to focus on our strengths. We need to play like we did against March and if we do that I think we can get a result.

“With the squad we have assembled, I have high ambitions for them.

“We beat them 3-1 last season at their place and drew 0-0 away. They are top of the table, you can't take it for granted we can get a result but I firmly believe we can.”

Whitton United 1, Thetford 1

Thetford Town travelled to Whitton United in Saturday's FA Cup tie and got off to a great start when within a minute a shot from Old was

not held by the home keeper and Dixon followed up to score.

Whitton countered but it was Town who had another chance on 10 minutes when a pass from Clayton found Dixon who shot wide.

Whitton played some nice football but the Town defence coped well and when Whitton did get through Bowden denied them a goal.

The first half saw Whitton have most of the possession but it was town just before the break with a chance for Howard from a ball by Jones just going wide. At half-time it was 1-0.

Whitton put Town under pressure in the early stages of the second half but once again Bowden and his defence stood firm.

Whitton equalised on 60 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Thompson, which was converted. Blake came on for Old and started to attack the Whitton defence. Howard had a chance and then Blake hit a post.

Whitton had some last-minute corners but Town held firm to deserve a replay this Tuesday. Final score 1-1.

Thetford: Bowden, Money, Thompson, Bailey, Turner, Jones, Clayton, Howard, Scott (Piggott), Dixon, Old (Blake).

Swaffham, who are two places below their local rivals, host new team Cambridge University Press who second in the table, two points behind leaders Long Melford with one win and one draw.

Secretary Ray Ewart said: “We have only played one game, there was a wedding in the clubhouse this weekend which was all good fun.”

This Saturday the Pedlars play Cambridge University Press, an unknown quantity: “We have never played them before. They are new to the Ridgeons League, which should be interesting.

“We have a young and enthusiastic side with lots to learn and a long way to go, but it's very encouraging.”
