JUNIOR and senior members of Thetford Athletic Club have been busy competing in recent events - both on the track and on the road.

At the Wroxham 5k road race, which incorporated the Norfolk championships, there were blustery conditions but three of the four athletes achieved personal bests in the challenging windy conditions.

In the junior men, Joseph Kirton was placed fourth with a considerable improvement on his pb in 18:44 minutes. He was closely followed by Jason Higgins, who picked himself up from an unlucky fall on the first bend to finish fifth in 18:45 minutes.

In the senior men, both Dean Kirton and Carl Higgins finished in pb times of 20:08 and 21:18 respectively to achieve 10th and 15th places.

A small team travelled to the Peterborough City Games as the track and field season draws to a close.

It was another breezy day, with yet more personal bests.

Both Elisha Bowers and Anna Hayward performed well in a big field in the U15 girls' 100m, 200m and long jump competitions.

Anna was placed third in the 200m with a pb time of 30.04 seconds. In the U15 boys Thomas Kirton finished third in the 100m in a time of 15.26.

Oliver Thompson was placed third in the hammer with a distance of 30.85 metres, and threw a pb of 24.52 metres in the discus.

For the U17s, Georgina Howe was placed third in the discus with a throw of 29.81m, and fifth in the hammer with a throw of 37.46m.

Lucy Tyler finished in fourth place in the 400m with a pb of 64.07.

Joseph Kirton achieved another pb of 2:18.15 in the 800m.

Three senior members of the club competed recently in the Wissey half-marathon. This is a small, local race held on quiet country roads, starting and finishing within sight of Oxborough Hall.

In near-perfect running conditions, the Thetford ladies acquitted themselves well. First home for Thetford was Rosemary Matlock, achieving a sub-two hour finish for 13.1 miles for the first time.

Rosemary finished in a time of 1-59:00 minutes, followed by Rita Norry in a time of 2-12:00. Angela McCarthy was the third lady home for Thetford, finishing in 2-21:0.

The Thetford ladies have further races planned in the coming months, taking advantage of the excellent autumn racing calendar in the East Anglia region. The club will also be competing in the Round Norfolk Relay on September 19 to 20.

Junior and senior members will be looking forward to the cross-country season as the track and field season winds down.
