Clear-cut chances were at a premium and Fowler headed just wide from Sobiechowski's cross. Town were denied a penalty when a hand-ball went unpunished just before the break.
Having got to half-time only one down in a strong wind, much was expected in the second period.
However, it was the hosts who made the early running and Hovell prevented the lead being extended on a couple of occasions.
Brandon had weathered the early pressure but midway through the half a defensive howler allowed the ever-dangerous Allen space to create an opening which was finished off at the second attempt despite Hovell's best efforts.
Peckham and Croucher gave the team some urgency when introduced.
It was an innocuous challenge on Bilham that saw him lose his composure. He dropped the ball at Waites' feet with seven minutes left and Town were back in the hunt.
Five minutes later Waites squared matters, with the keeper again too interested in other things rather than saving the ball.
In time added on he did manage to deny Waites a hat-trick with a fine save but, from the home fans' point of view, the damage had already been done.
On the balance of play, this was a fair result although Town will have been happier at the final whistle.
