Thetford Town Football Club have announced that they are parting company with manager Mick Money at the end of the season.

This shock announcement was made after Money asked the club if there would be any expenses for players next season.

Money had a plan to get promotion in three seasons with a top-ten finish in the first season, top five in the second and promotion by the third.

It seems that the manager's ambitions were far in excess of the clubs so a parting of ways was the best way forward for both parties.

Although a top-ten finish was targeted by Money for his young, inexperienced side with an average age of just 20 years, they could only muster 14th.

Had had some of the nine narrow 2-1 defeats been turned into draws then a top-ten position would have been achieved.

Money blames the lack of a prolific goalscorer for not being able to reach his target: “When the club cut expenses it was impossible to sign the striker the team craved for and the loss of Karl Pask at the start of the season for the same reason was a major blow,” he said.

Money, who took over the reins at the start of the season after the sacking of previous manager Simon Brooks, is convinced that if Pask had stayed a top-ten finish would have been a formality.

Money's first job was to bring in a new club sponsor Adie Lee of flooringsupplies.co.uk to the tune of 4000.

This enabled the club to buy new kits and a change of club colours from claret and blue to maroon and white for first team and reserves plus valuable training equipment.

Despite the lack of expenses the team stayed loyal to the manager and still managed a good Norfolk Senior Cup run, beating last seasons finalists Sheringham before losing to narrowly to Dereham Town in the quarter-finals with only 10 men.

Other high points for Money's men were 0-0 draws with champions Newmarket and promotion certainties Halstead and a resounding 4-3 victory over Diss Town.

Training under coaches Bobby Briggs and Paddy Linfield has been professional, well attended and very enjoyable all season and Thetford Town has become a club where young players could come and gain valuable Ridgeons League experience and a high level of coaching.

This was shown in the U18's who finished second from bottom last season but a very creditable third this season in their league, only losing one match all season which gives the club a great foundation for the future.

Money had also brought in an experienced physio in Shaun Spurdens who had previous experience with Fakenham Town, who has enabled many players to play through injury and not deplete the team.

Money was also keen to see the existing clubhouse reconfigured and refurbished so the club could offer facilities for parties and celebrations thus making them self sufficient and not reliant on sponsorship money.

With the visit of Norwich City in pre-season this could now be a possibility.
