It was a great weekend for Thetford Town FC, with the first team securing Thurlow Nunn Premier Division football for next season with a 2-0 win at Hadleigh United.

The club’s under-16s also won the John Savage County Cup and it was announced that Thetford Independent FC will be joining the club to become Thetford Town Youth.

The Brecklanders’ first team travelled to last season’s champion Hadleigh following a 2-0 defeat away to Brantham. Even with four key players missing, manager Mark Scott, was still able to field a full complement of substitutes for the match. Town started brightly and Halen Smith forced an error from the home goalkeeper, which striker James Dean pounced on only to see a wicked bobble cause him to miss the chance.

Hadleigh then came into the game, first hitting the post then Scott Cruickshank making a good save. In the 35th minute of the game Dean found himself one-on-one with the keeper and slotted the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead at the break.

Town started the second half brightly and a free-kick from Ryan Skipp on 57 minutes found the head of Dean for 2-0 and his 13th of the term.

The victory leaves Thetford eight points clear of the relegation zone with two games to play, at home to third-from-bottom Wivenhoe this Saturday and at second-placed Stanway on the final day of the season.
