Shoppers have been warned to be extra careful after a spate of thefts of purses from handbags in Thetford.

Thetford PC James Lister said: “I would advise local people to be vigilant when out shopping in the town and make sure their handbags are securely fastened and in view at all times.

“We have a team of dedicated officers out policing the town centre and we are using CCTV from the shops to help us track down the thieves.”

People have been given a series of advice including keep bags closed and close to you at all times, closing purses and putting them away before leaving a till, not to overload yourself with bags and coats, avoid carrying a purse or wallet in a back trouser pocket, keep cash secure and out of sight and not leaving a handbag, push chair or shopping trolley unattended for any length of time.

There are a range of handbag alarms and security devices available from Thetford Police Station.

Anyone with information on thefts should contact Thetford Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0845 456 4567 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
