This half term the Norwich Gaming Festival returns to the city so to celebrate we have compiled a list of ten of the best games of all time.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

The fifth instalment of Rockstar Game's violent mission-based game was released in 2004 has been widely considered to be one of the greatest video games ever made. It was the best-selling game during its release year and had sold over 27.5 million copies worldwide by 2011.

The Sims

This life simulation game developed by Maxis allows players to design their sims, build their homes and create their families. Known for its cheat codes and the resulting impossibly large mansions, this franchise has sold almost 200 million copies world-wide making it one of the best-selling video games of all time.

Final Fantasy VII

One of the most popular suggestions for this list at EDP headquarters this 1997 game created by Square for PlayStation is widely regarded as a landmark title and one of the greatest games of all time, winning various Game of the Year awards. Within three days of its Japanese release it had sold 2,041,641 copies.

Mario Kart 64

This 1996 racing game for Nintendo starring Italian plumber Mario and other characters from his world initially received divisive reviews from critics. However reports from June 2014 said the game had sold almost 10 million copies worldwide making it the second best-selling game for the Nintendo 64.

Tomb Raider

Development of the original Lara Croft series began 25 years ago and it has since spawned 18 games, a number of spin-off games and a movie franchise. The Tomb Raider games have sold over 63 million copies across the globe and have generally been met with critical acclaim, landing itself a place on the Walk of Game and Guinness World Records.

Tetris

The simple concept of this tile-matching puzzle game is frequently named as one of the best games of all time and was first released in 1984. Originally programmed by Russian game designer Alexey Pajitnov, the game or one of its many variants is available for nearly every video game console and computer operating system in existence, as well as graphing calculators, mobile phones, PDAs, portable media players and as an 'Easter egg' on non-media products like oscilloscope.

Goldeneye

This first-person shooter game developed by Rare is based on the 1995 Bond movie of the same name and was released for Nintendo 64 in 1997. It is considered an important game in the history of first-person shooters and pioneered features such as single-player missions, stealth elements and a console multi-player death match mode.

Pokémon Crystal

The seventh in the series of Game Boy Pokémon games, Crystal allows players to cross over into both worlds of the Japanese fictional quest games. Originally released in 2000, the plot largely followed its predecessors though incorporated what it considered to be the best aspects of its games as well as new features.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

This open world action role-playing video game took the internet by storm when it was released in 2011 for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. On its first day of release over 230,000 people were shown to be playing concurrently on the game distribution platform Steam and estimations suggest the game has sold 22.7 million copies worldwide.

Candy Crush Saga

This free-to-play puzzle game was released by King in 2012 and is considered one of the first and most successful uses of a freemium game model. In 2014 more than 93 million people were playing Candy Crush Saga and revenue over a three-month period was reported to be over $493 million.
