Gorleston boss Ricci Butler admits to having doubts his side can make it all the way to Wembley in the FA Vase – but would love to be proved wrong.

The Greens take on FC Romania at Emerald Park in the second round of the competition this afternoon as they look to bounce back from their 3-0 reverse against Ipswich Wanderers in the Premier Division last week.

Whilst the Vase offers a genuine chance for clubs at Gorleston's level to dream of a day at the home of English football, Butler admits his squad need to improve on their recent outings to go deep into this season's competition.

'If I'm being honest – I'm not sure,' said Butler when asked about his side's Wembley prospects.

'I think it would take a fair few players to step up their game. But if you get a couple of good draws then you never know. On our day we are capable of beating anyone at this level and it's something we could achieve – that's obviously the aim and we have just got to go out and play to the best of our ability each week.'

Like Gorleston, Romania also ply their trade at Step Five of the non-league pyramid and look to be a team in form, having not tasted defeat in their last six games.

'When the draw was made I had a look at the league they play in and where they were but since then I've not really concerned myself with it,' said the Greens chief, whose side would pocket £1,000 should they advance.

'At the end of the day it's a cup competition and whichever team performs best on the day will go through.'

Two worrying 3-0 defeats on the spin against Brantham and Ipswich have given Butler much to ponder ahead of today's tie but the manager insists his side are merely coming to terms with the recent wet weather.

'I think it's to do with the pitches at this time of year and that's something we're going to have to deal with,' he said.

'We've been playing some nice football on good surfaces and went nine games unbeaten, but in recent weeks, with the weather, pitches have tended to become a bit boggy and difficult to play on.'

Kirkley are also in Vase second round action as they entertain Edgware Town of the Spartan South Midlands League Division One. The Royals will be favourites against the Londoners, who play a level below Gavan Tipple's side at Step Six.

Mat Blake of Norwich United will be chasing his 100th goal for the Planters against Hullbridge Sports in Vase. He grabbed his 99th goal against former club Thetford last weekend but will be hoping to reach three figures against Sports, who play in the Essex Senior Premier Division – the same level as Damian Hilton's men.

Other cup action sees Thetford travel to Hellesdon in the fourth round of the Norfolk Senior Cup whilst Swaffham will be wary of an upset against Anglian Combination Premier Division high-flyers Acle.

In the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division Fakenham entertain Newmarket.
