Thetford volunteers needed for hospice scheme

PUBLISHED: 11:39 29 January 2012

Volunteers are needed to help with everyday tasks for people who are too ill to do it themselves.

St Nicholas Hospice Care is looking for people, or “neighbours”, to help out with things such as walking the dog or picking up a prescription for those with life-shortening illnesses and their families.

The scheme has already been successful in Haverhill, Stanton, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket and Sudbury, and will now be rolled out Thetford.

Hospice voluntary services manager, Emma Page, said: “We know there are people in Thetford who will really benefit from a neighbour’s help, so we now need to find volunteers.”

The Hospice hopes to recruit a team of Hospice Neighbours volunteers from the Thetford area and full training will be provided.

Hospice Neighbours co-ordinator Kay Newman will be at the Hospice’s Thetford shop, at 6 Bridge Street, on February 2 between 10am and 4pm; February 4 between 10.30am and 3pm; February 10 between 10am and 4pm; and February 11 between 10.30am and 3pm, when she will be able to provide more information.

If you know someone who could use Hospice Neighbours – or who is interested in volunteering for the scheme – contact Kay on 01284 719638.
