THETFORD savers were praised by local MEP Richard Howitt after reaching a landmark total in two years.

People celebrated as together they hit 50,000 at the Rainbow Credit Savers Union, which encourages people to save and borrow responsibly.

Norfolk Euro MEP Richard Howitt congratulated the savers at the town centre building last week.

He said: “The incredible target reached by Rainbow Savers is great news for the local community and shows the extent of the need for their services.

“Credit Unions offer a secure way of saving and borrowing and will fill a gap that often allows loan sharks to prey on people facing money problem.

“Loan sharks in Norfolk have been charging astronomical interest rates with many victims facing threats of violence and seeing their loans increase even though they are making repayments, driving them deeper into poverty.”
