A Tesco store is to undergo changes to its entrance in a bid by the company to reduce energy costs.

The supermarket giant is adding glass panelled doors to a number of its larger stores as it attempts to keep them cool in summer and warm in winter.

As a result Tesco in Kilverstone, Thetford, has submitted a planning application for a new entrance lobby and new doors to the main entrance.

Nick Gellatly, cooperative affairs manager for Tesco said if planning permission was granted work was not likely to begin before spring next year and could take two to three months to complete.

He added: “We want to reduce the amount of energy we spend in the store. With the doors opening straight into the store it takes up quite a lot of energy and when we heat the store it blows out through the front door; similarly, when we try to cool it, the warm air blows in from outside.

“We hope it will have a minimum effect on customers in that we'll finish the work when it'll cause less inconvenience to customers and neighbours.”

The planning application will go before Breckland Council Development Control Committee later this year.
