THETFORD is not a place renowned for its fruit, but thanks to a recent grant visitors to the town can take advantage of a hidden gem.

A mind-boggling variety of apples can be found in Thetford's Forgotten Garden, from those which can be eaten straight from the tree, to those so sharp they are only good for pickling.

And now, thanks to a funding boost from Pride in Breckland, a council initiative, visitors will be able to enjoy the orchard for years to come.

Every tree in the garden was sponsored and planted by the community, and now the money will be used to buy materials to help protect the trees and a recycled bench for visitors to rest.

Theresa Hewett, executive member of communities said: “I am delighted that Pride in Breckland could help fund improvements to the Orchard.

“The purpose of the trees is not only to provide fruit but to encourage wildlife and have a positive effect on the area. It is a haven for residents to relax and enjoy.”

The garden, which is hidden away in the grounds of Ford Place, near Nuns' Bridges, is open to the public from Thursday to Sunday, between 10am and 6pm.
