Thetford Town Council will look into registering a former school site as an Asset of Community Value.

Norfolk County Council recently decided to sell the former Elm Road Centre in Thetford, in an effort to save money after facing a budget gap.

The authority had been prepared to spend £800,000 on the former school and children’s services site, but councillors recently voted to sell it.

The decision was criticised by Terry Jermy, Labour county councillor for Thetford West.

At the town council planning meeting on September 11 he put forward the idea to register the site as an asset, with fellow councillors agreeing with him. It would enable local groups and organisations a period of time to register an interest in using the site.

The town council would also have discussions with the local community via a public consultation to see what they think the site should be used for.
