A talk about Thomas Paine’s life before he emigrated to America is set to be held in Thetford.
The Common Sense Club will welcome Paul Myles who will give a talk on the political activist and philosopher’s first political pamphlet, The Case of the Officers of Excise.
Mr Myles will also talk about Thetford’s most famous son’s influences which were recorded by the Sussex Weekly Advertiser.
The talk will be held at Thetford Grammar School at 7.30pm on Friday, February 9.
Stuart Wright, chairman of the club and event organiser, said, “It is a great opportunity to learn a little more of the influences behind Thomas Paine’s first publication the Case of the Officers of Excise and about his life in Lewes in Sussex prior to emigrating to America.
“During the six years that Thomas Paine was in Lewes he contributed to what was then one of the most radical newspapers in the country.”
