PEOPLE in Thetford had the chance to rediscover their town on foot, cycle or public transport at a special green event.

A free bike clinic was held in Thetford and a free map given out to show how easy it is to get around without the use of a car.

The Dr Bike clinic was held last week at the launch of the new Thetford Green Travel Map, in the town's market place.

The map shows short cuts for pedestrians, cycle facilities and bus and train information and the event included other activities such as a cycle road show, with a range of wacky bikes to try, Norfolk County Council staff who were able to advise on individual travel needs, and giveaways to encourage sustainable travel.

Cabinet member for planning and transportation, Adrian Gunson, said: “The Green Travel Map for Thetford makes it far easier for people to mix and match modes of travel, for example, combining a walk to work or the shops with return journey by bus.

“For journeys around town, cycling is often quicker than the car, and both cycling and walking can play an important part in an active, healthy lifestyle, as well as reducing congestion for those who need to use a car.”

The maps will also be delivered to all Thetford schools.

Norfolk County Council's Smarter Travel Choices officer, Stevie Spencer, added: “The map provides you with all the information you need to be able to travel around the town without a car.

“I hope people will come along to get a free map, get the bike checked over and be ready for the weeks of warmer cycling and walking weather ahead.”

Copies of the map are also be available in libraries, council information points and on the county council's website at www.norfolk.gov.uk
