A CARAVAN site north of Thetford could be set for expansion if planning permission for 37 new pitches is granted.

A CARAVAN site north of Thetford could be set for expansion if planning permission for 37 new pitches is granted.

The application by the Covert Caravan Club includes a toilet block, an automatic vehicle access barrier, an improved site warden block with a bathroom garage and covered storage, and a bigger site reception.

The site, at Hillborough, near Thetford, currently has 104 pitches in the middle of forestry commission woodland and is run by The Caravan Club which has more than 200 sites across the country.

The development would mean a large amount of concrete being removed which would be crushed and reused as a base for the all-weather caravan pitches.

The remaining road surfaces would be levelled in a bid to help the movement of people and cars around the site.

The Caravan Club said it wished to “upgrade and refurbish its current portfolio of sites within the UK network as part of an ongoing programme to maintain standards expected by their members and to meet the needs of current legislation.

“The Caravan Club fully intends to comply with current regulations and good practice to make the proposed improvements as accessible as practical to both members of the public and employees.”

It went on to say that any potential increase in occupancy of the site brought about by the toilet block would be offset by a 17pc reduction in available pitches.

A decision will be made by Breckland Council on December 1 and people can comment on the plans by going to the council's website at www.breckland.gov.uk
