A community caf marked its fifth birthday with a special celebration.

Caf One, Keystone Development Trust’s social enterprise caf, based at its Innovation Centre on Croxton Road, celebrated with a special party which coincided with an open day at the Innovation Centre at which people had a chance to take a look around and even venture to the roof for panoramic views of Thetford.

However, the venture has grown into not only a caf over the past five years but also delivers other community projects.

It now also operates a sandwich round, catering for external events, along with delivering community projects.

These include the Joy of Food, funded by Thetford Healthy Town, which carries out practical cooking courses to more than 600 people and a food box scheme which delivered weekly seasonal vegetable bags to more than 140 families in the town.

It was also presented with Breckland Council’s HONOR award which recognises businesses which have added healthier options to their menus.

Director of finance and social enterprise at Keystone Development Trust, Alan Flack, said between 50 and 60 people had visited the caf for its celebrations and added: “The weather put a bit of a dampener on the event but it was busy throughout the day. People who hadn’t been in before came in and were really impressed with it.

“When we started the caf it was quite quiet in the building but in the past two years it’s just taken off.

“Obviously we haven’t got a great footfall but people are coming back once they’ve been the first time. All the food is local and seasonal and people seem to like it.

“Plus, not only are we delivering in the caf but we’ve been able to affect other projects too and it helps the community as a whole.

“We’ve got to quite a nice size now and we want to get even bigger and do more so it’s just a case of looking at which projects offer good value.”

The caf is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 2.30pm.
