Organisers of the Thomas Paine festival in Thetford are calling on budding thespians to come forward to take part in a play about the famous author's life.

The Citizen of the World is set to be produced in the autumn as part of a series of events to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of the 18th century writer and radical who was born in the town.

Mike Levy, who wrote the specially commissioned play, is holding two introductory meetings this week for people wishing to join the cast. The meetings will take place at the Carnegie Room in Thetford from 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Formal auditions are set to be held next month.

Mr Levy said the play was open to all ages and abilities.

“We are aiming for a real community event, large-scale with music, spectacle, crowd scenes and plenty of smaller parts - something for everyone who wants to be involved, so do give it a try,” he said.
