A sixth form pupil has her sights set on a career in science after spending the summer working at a prestigious research lab.

Gabriela Morais-Taylor, a year 13 student at Thetford Academy, spent five weeks analysing stem cell research at Cambridge University’s department of genetics.

The teenagers was one of only 10 Norfolk students to gain a place on the Nuffield Research Placements scheme, which offers A-level students paid work experience at top research institutions.

Gabriela, who is studying chemistry, biology, and sociology, said: “I applied for the research placement because it was an amazing opportunity to experience the research environment, and work with professionals and students in the area that I’m interested in.

“The placement was a wonderful experience and confirmed that I want to study and work in scientific research.”

She hopes to study biomedical science at university before pursuing a research career.

Dawn Muir, a science at Thetford Academy, added: “There was tough competition for this scheme so Gabriela did fantastically well to secure a place.

Gabriela and her family will be invited to a celebration event held at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, on Thursday, November 2.
