A retail park on the outskirts of Thetford could be set for further expansion after its owner submitted an application to renew plans for a new store.

Proposals to build an extra 1,580sqm of non-food retail space and a 939sqm garden centre at the Forest Retail Park were approved by Breckland Council four years ago.

The Crown Estate has now resubmitted the outline plans for the 1.7ha woodland site between London Road and the A11 Thetford bypass after the land was not developed.

The application comes after a developer revealed proposals last month for a Wickes DIY store and garden centre on the former Turkish Delight factory in London Road.

The Forest Retail Park opened in 2001 and is already home to retailers such as Sainsbury's, which completed a supermarket expansion project earlier this year, Currys, Focus and McDonald's.

Daniel Bradley, of Carter Jonas, in Cambridge, agent for the Crown Estate, said the renewal of the outline plans at the park fitted in with the character of the area and would not pose a harmful impact to the vitality and viability of Thetford town centre.
