Progress is being made by a group hoping to open a free school in Brandon.

SABRES (Save Breckland School) had campaigned to keep Breckland Middle School in Brandon from closing but a decision was taken to close the school next year.

The group, which is now an educational trust, is now in the latter stages of an application to create a free school on the site, on Crown Street.

A procurement event was organised earlier this summer with the aim of outlining to potential providers what the requirements would be, both before and after the school opens in September 2012, subject to ministerial approval.

The group was also able to inform them of the nature of the EU procurement process the trust is in the process of conducting.

Since the event, the group has received eight Pre-Qualification Questionnaires and the top five will be invited to proceed to the tender stage.

Consultation with all stakeholders, including parents, residents and local authorities, will begin in September.
