Police have begun trawling through hours of CCTV footage in a bid to catch a rapist who abducted a woman from a supermarket car park at the weekend.

Detectives yesterday revealed they had received more than 35 calls and emails from the public following the terrifying incident that began at the Tesco store in Brandon on Saturday.

Suffolk Police has also mobilised its helicopter to try to identify the isolated caravan or cabin where the 21-year-old victim was taken.

Officers yesterday revealed the woman had been threatened with a knife and pushed inside a 4x4 vehicle after the offender asked for help with his holdall bag at 2.15pm on Saturday at the London Road store.

The sex attacker drove her to a location about 20 minutes away, where he raped her, before returning her to Wimbledon Avenue, in Brandon, at about 5pm.

Det Chief Insp David Cutler, who is leading the Major Investigation Team (MIT) investigation, yesterday said he was “pleased” with the response from the public.

“The offender used a knife to force the victim to do as he ordered; out of fear she complied and lay on the floor of the car throughout both journeys. It is vital that anyone with any information about him, or the isolated, flimsy, small building he took her to contact police immediately.

“The additional officers on patrol in the town centre are there to provide reassurance and advice, as well as to speak to anyone who may have any information. This offence has shocked the local community,” he said.

The offender is described as white, in his late 50s or early 60s, around 5ft 3in tall, of medium build with a pot belly. He has bushy white/grey sideburns, with heavy grey facial hair and a ruddy complexion. He was wearing a red woolly hat, a red fleece, black tracksuit bottoms, trainers and glasses. He was generally dirty and smoked roll-ups.

His car is described as a dirty, older-style dark grey 4x4 with front seats only, a row of four blue spotlights on a bull bar at the front, and a rear door rather than a boot.

Det Chief Insp Cutler added that CCTV throughout the town was being viewed and the police air support team was searching for the rape scene, which was approached through a gate and track.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the MIT incident room on 01473 613824 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
