A councillor has voiced his frustration that people have to lose their lives before road changes are made, after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on a rural route.

Emergency services were called at 7.30pm on Saturday, April 20 after a Suzuki GSXR motorbike, travelling from Watton on the A1075 towards Thetford, through Wretham, was involved in crash with a chevron sign close to the junction with Church Road.

The rider was found in nearby woodland and pronounced dead at the scene. It is not clear what led to the crash.

But chairman of Wretham Parish Council, Harold Smith, said motorists often speed through the village.

Mr Smith, 66, said: “The road through the village is 40mph but there is a radar sign outside of my house which flashes when someone is speeding and it is always on.

“The road is quite twisty and known for motorcyclists to enjoy it on the way up to Norwich. The parish council has tried to get highways to add signage but they have been out and done a survey but they do not think it is a problem.

“It is a shame that people have to die before changes are made.”

The A1075 has been the scene of a number of deaths in the last five years.

On November 19, 2017, 30-year-old father-of-four Terry Cooper died when his Vauxhall Astra was involved in a head-on collision with a blue Volvo C70.

And on January 8, 2014, Ashley Taylor died after being hit by a motorist while hitch-hiking down the A1075. She died at the scene.

The latest incident at Wretham happened the day before another motorbike crash in the area on Sunday, April 21, when a Yahama motorcycle and Mercedes crashed on the A1065 at Weeting.

It happened near the junction with Peppers High Hill at 3.15pm.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 20s, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, with serious injuries to his legs, ribs and collar bone.

Officers are appealing to anyone who may have dashcam footage or seen the rider before the crash. They should contact PC Andy Miles at Swaffham Roads Policing on 101.

A Norfolk County Council spokesperson said: “We will look closely at the outcome of the investigation when it’s available but it would be inappropriate at this stage to speculate about the circumstances of this tragic incident.”
