It may be spring next week but temperatures are set to plummet across Norfolk and Suffolk this weekend with the chance of “significant” snow fall.

The Beast from the East saw most of the country swept by heavy snow and ice at the end of February, with roads brought to a standstill and schools closed.

East Anglia then avoided snow brought by the Pest from the West but forecasters have warned that parts of the region could see “significant” snow fall this weekend.

Meteorologist Dan Holley tweeted: “Patchy outbreaks of rain on Friday will likely to turn to sleet or snow on Friday night as cold air arrives from the east. Some snow is then likely at times over the weekend, especially later Saturday and into Sunday which could be significant in places.”

He also confirmed there is a possibility of disruption to road and rail travel and said snowdrifts could be an issue once again due to “strong east or northeasterly winds.”

“Snow accumulations will tend to be greatest towards the coasts (as they were during the last spell) but not ruling out at this stage some disruptive snow further west given some organised features which could spread snow further inland,” he added.

But a spokeswoman for the Met Office confirmed this cold snap would not compare to the effects of the Beast from the East.

“This system doesn’t compare in any way to what we had before,” she said “It is going to be a cold spell, there is a chance some places on Sunday may struggle to get above freezing so it is going to be cold, but we are not talking anywhere near what we had the weekend before last.”
