Up to 25 new jobs could be created after low cost shop chain QD was given approval on Monday for a huge extension to a distribution and storage centre at Snetterton.

The company currently employs 75 people at the existing centre at Harling Road and the number is set to rise to 100 when the 193,000 sq ft additional space is added on land close to the A11.

Breckland's development control committee agreed the plan as long as tree planting is put in around the “huge” extension.

Councillor Terry Lamb complained about the “ugly” building and said there should be a better design rather than tree planting.

“People used to build very attractive warehouses. Unfortunately they don't any more and we have to put up with the lowest common denominator,” he said.

But other councillors said it was a warehouse so the building and landscaping would be acceptable.

Shirley Howard-Alpe said: “If you start putting anything more ornate there it will stand out like a sore thumb.”

Planning officer Nick Moys said: “It is a large building, there is no getting away from it. It is a warehouse.”
