‘Hard work and good food’ - the secrets to long life for centenarian

A centenarian has cited “hard work and good food” as the key to her longevity as she celebrates her 100th birthday.
Janet Nichols, of Watton, marked her special day with a visit from Watton mayor, Pat Warwick, and opening a card from the Queen.
Born on August 6, 1920, in Saham Hills, she was known then as Janet Blower and grew up with her three brothers and sister, Ethel.
When she left school at 14, she moved to York with her sister and worked at Terry’s chocolate orange factory for three and a half years.

Eventually, she moved back to Norfolk and in 1940 married Jack Nichols in Saham Hills church.
A landworker most of her life, she spent the last 15 years before retirement working at Watton greengrocers, Samples.
She continued to live at Saham until 1986, when she moved to her flat in Watton.
On her big day she had family, including her grandson, great grandson and great nephew, at her celebrations along with many friends and neighbours.
She said: “The highlights of my day were my card from the Queen and a visit from Watton mayor to toast my 100 years.”
She added that the secret to a long life was hard work and good food.
