An inquest was opened today into the death of a 38-year-old man who drowned at a river in Thetford.

The body of Karl Waller, of Baron Court, Old Market Street, was found in 18 inches of water at the Little Ouse, near Spring Walk, over the weekend.

The fork lift truck driver left home on Friday afternoon and was recovered from the river about half a mile from his home by members of the public at midday on Sunday.

William Armstrong, greater Norfolk coroner, who this morning opened the inquest in Norwich, said the preliminary view of Home Office pathologist Nat Carey was that Mr Waller had died from drowning. He added that there was also evidence that Mr Waller had been drinking.

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

A full post-mortem report is still being awaited and the inquest was adjourned for a date to be fixed.
