Breckland Council has set aside £48,000 of its own cash and has now been given the additional money by Defra to work on the former Rutherford Way landfill site.
The cash will also be used to carry out an appraisal on the site to see what could be done with it in future.
The council has a responsibility under the Environmental Protection Act to make best possible future use of the site.
