TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Norfolk schoolgirl killed in a road accident in America.

Eighteen-year-old Jodie Wharf, who was born and raised in Thetford, died on May 4 after the car she was travelling in crashed into a lorry in Missouri.

Family, friends, and teachers of the former Charles Burrell High School pupil have paid their respects to the popular teenager, who moved to the USA with her mother and twin brother in 2005.

Miss Wharf, who lived in Republic, Missouri, was in the passenger seat of a friend's Chevrolet car when the vehicle ploughed into the back of a parked lorry and trailer.

A candlelit vigil was held at her home and her funeral took place last week. The teenager, who was born in Thetford on September 13, 1989, left the town for a new life in America three years ago with mother Julianne and brother Jake.

Miss Wharf was described by her American classmates as “sweet, funny, warm-hearted and a breath of fresh air.” In an online condolence book, Nancy Robinson, headteacher of Charles Burrell High School, said: “We will always remember Jodie with much fondness at Charles Burrell High School. We send our condolences to all the family at this sad time.”
