A man from Cambridgeshire drove to Norfolk so he could fly-tip a mattress.
Following an investigation by Breckland Council the man's vehicle was tracked to a company in the Midlands which had leased it to another company in East Anglia.
Investigators contacted the culprit's employer as the van being used was registered to it and being used out of business hours.
After being notified of the fly-tip in Rutherford Way, Thetford, the council's enforcement officer spoke to members of the public and used CCTV to link the waste to the offender.
Alison Webb, executive member for housing, health and environment, said: "Fly-tipping is illegal and a serious environmental crime. Breckland Council has a zero tolerance approach towards fly tipping and we will not hesitate to take action to make sure people pay for their crimes."
The man was handed a fixed-penalty notice of £400 plus clearance costs.
