Flower power nets youngsters prize

A WHOPPING two-metre-plus sunflower won pupils of Thetford Grammar School a prize in the town's gardening competition.
Keen growers were encouraged to get planting by Thetford Town Council which supplied the seeds.
The specimen cultivated by grammar school pupils Leo Hook, Hamish Fleming, Robert Penny, Callum Marshall-Wyer and Hannah Brimble topped 230cms.
It beat off the challenges of Queensway Infants School (219cm), Queensway Junior (216cm), Raleigh Infant and Nursery (208cm) and Charles Burrell High School (142cm).
The youngsters won a £25 voucher for spring bedding plants from sponsors Shadwell Stud.
On Friday afternoon, the Mayor of Thetford John Harding together with the councillors welcomed the winners of all the competition categories to a celebration ceremony and afternoon tea.

Shadwell estate manager Alan Lee presented the prizes.
Best front house garden winner was Roy Carpenter of Fairfields, Thetford, who won a £50 voucher for spring bedding plants from Shadwell.
Best business floral display winner was Jay Thompson, of the Black Horse public house, who also won a £50 voucher.
