Angry parents have pledged to stage a series of protests following a decision that could close a Suffolk market town's only middle school.

Breckland Middle School in Brandon is one of 11 schools across the county that are scheduled for closure by 2012 as a result of plans to scrap the three-tier education system.

But parents, governors, teachers, and children in the town are proposing to stage two protests next month in a bid to overturn a decision made by Suffolk county councillors last month.

A group of 12 residents have formed a parents' action group, which is set to hold a peaceful demonstration outside the Brandon Town Council headquarters, in Market Hill, on the afternoon of Monday, March 2. They will also be visiting properties on Crown Street on March 13 to warn local residents about the likelihood of the middle school site being turned into a housing development.

Parents in Brandon are unhappy about their 11-year-olds having to travel to Mildenhall College of Technology for their education and the loss of a community facility.

Objectors have six weeks to appeal against the Suffolk County Council decision and have pledged to go to the Office of the Schools Adjudicator if unsuccessful.
