RETAILERS are urged to be aware of counterfeit £10 and £20 notes circulating in Thetford.

Officers from the town's Safer Neighbourhood Team are carrying out enquiries to identify those responsible for illegal notes.

They have offered the following advice;

If you suspect that you know who has passed the note to you, then put it in a bag to preserve any fingerprint evidence and contact the police.

Exercise caution if asked to change banknotes into larger or smaller denominations, and check each note to ensure they are not counterfeit.

If you have been given a forged banknote in change when you have bought something, hand it into your local police station or bank and give details, if at all possible, of where you were given it.

There are a number of security features on banknotes, such as the feel of the paper, raised print in certain areas, the metallic thread which should appear continuous if held to the light, watermarks, holograms and ultraviolet numbers.

Anyone who has information regarding forged notes should contact Norfolk Constabulary on 0845 456 4567 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
