THE owner of a neglected Thetford church has been given seven days to improve the state of the building.
St Mary the Less, a Grade II* listed building on Old Bury Road, has fallen into a state of disrepair in recent years and is considered an eyesore by many people living in the town.
London property owner Ron Collins has now been served with an emergency works notice by Breckland Council to start work within a week from June 23.
He must make the building watertight and stop further deterioration. If he fails to do so Breckland Council have the right to carry out the works and charge Mr Collins.
Ownership of the building, which no longer serves as a church, has changed several times and previous permission granted to transform it into flats lapsed.
A new planning application is currently with Breckland Council.
Earlier this month the church failed to sell at auction and Mr Collins has pledged to put it back on the market.
