Fans of the popular television programme Dad’s Army can take a little piece of the show home with the creation of a series of small statues.

A total of 80 sculptures will be made, one for each episode, and will be an exact copy of a bronze statue of Captain George Mainwaring in Thetford town centre.

The little men, which sit on a wooden plinth and are approximately 26cm tall, will be hand-made to order, in cold cast resin, complete with a bronze plaque featuring the name and number of a particular episode.

Part of the proceeds will go towards the Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford, which has organised the sculptures.

Manager Corinne Fulford said around 20 had been pre-ordered, and added: “As far as I know they’re unique - I know of no other sculptor who has done this.”

“They’re all completely done by hand and are specific to the sculptor. Every one is slightly different because they’re all made as we go along. We’ve had interest from across the country - for me it’s an exciting time.”

Created by sculptor Sean Hedges-Quinn, who created the Sir Bobby Robson statue in Ipswich and the full-size Captain Mainwaring statue in Thetford, the mini Mainwarings will each cost 450, and payment can be by instalments.

Each will include a certificate of authenticity, signed by Dad’s Army co-writer Jimmy Perry.

Ms Fulford added: “It’s a very expensive project for us because they’re so good and the cost has been very high so it’s been quite a leap of faith for the volunteers but it’s been great.

“We would have liked to do something smaller and more reasonably priced but everything these days costs a lot of money and even a smaller statue would have been about 70 or 80.”

In 2007 a three-year campaign of fundraising by members of the Dad’s Army Museum was launched in Thetford to mark the years in which the sitcom was filmed in and around the town: between 1968 and 1977.

In 2010 the town’s links were cemented when a bronze statue of Captain Mainwaring was unveiled off Bridge Street.
