Youngsters in Thetford have been testing their artistic skills alongside their language skills in a recent competition.

Thetford Grammar Schools Modern Foreign Languages department held the Window on Europe contest as part of its celebration of the European day of Languages.

Students were tasked with creating an image which depicted their view of a European language, including its culture and traditions.

The exhibits form a colourful part of the display area in the Modern Foreign Languages teaching block.

The eventual winners were Thetford sisters, Millie, from year nine, and Bobbi Findlay, the school’s head girl who specialises in French and German.

Bobbi has recently been granted admission as a Student Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and intends to study modern foreign languages at university.

Other winners were Kirishoban Sanjeevivijay and Megan Curley. Both students impressed the judges with their creative images of European languages.

Head of modern Foreign Languages Mr Durling said: “[I was] impressed by all the work produced by the students but especially by those students who demonstrated that their language lessons have made a lasting impression on them.” “[Through] the school’s tradition of creating strong links with Europe through regular exchange trips and study trips to France, Germany and other European destinations we encourage our students to immerse themselves in the language and lives of different countries as we believe that learning a foreign language is a vital component in the development of our pupils.”
