A retired clergyman who went missing in the East Harling area died in hospital yesterday, shortly after being found by police.

The Rev Raymond Powell, a retired clergyman who lived in Roydon, had been reported missing from The Beeches care home in East Harling just after midnight on Tuesday.

He had only been at the care home since Monday and was due to stay there for a week of respite care.

A major air and land search involving 50 police officers and volunteers was launched to find Mr Powell, who had Alzheimer's and was diabetic.

He was discovered by the police helicopter at about 1.20pm yesterday at the bottom of an embankment at East Harling Industrial Estate.

Because of his medical condition he was found semi-conscious and was taken by ambulance to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

But a spokesman for the hospital said Mr Powell later died in the accident and emergency department.

According to Crockford's Clerical Directory 2008-2009 Mr Powell was the priest in charge of Babraham from 1985 to 2000 and the vicar of Sawston from 1979 until 2000, both in the Diocese of Ely.

In 2000 he retired to the Diocese of Norwich and he had the Bishop's Permission to Officiate until 2006.
