A community hub has given visitors a chance to see how it has transformed an abandoned school into a thriving centre for businesses and local groups.

The Charles Burrell Centre, in Thetford, opened its doors on Monday for a Taster Day.

The day saw a host of free activities attract the crowds, with visitors able to get a tour of the building.

The centre launched in 2014 after taking over the site from Thetford Academy.

It now serves as a home for 34 businesses, charities and other groups, including Thetford Foodbank and Thetford Toy Library.

Terry Jermy, centre chairman, said the day was a chance to show how far it has come.

“Over the last six months there’s been a big increase in the number of new tenants which is very encouraging.

“We wanted to showcase everything that’s here now, and what was really interesting was how many people had never been here.

“They came and tried things out, so hopefully some tenants will get new customers,” he said.
